The Last Season
"An amazing book..."

I am reading an amazing book on the disappearance of a National Park Ranger in Sequoia Kings Canyon. Eric Blehm calls the book "The Last Season". The book covers much more then the search for backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson, it talks about department policies and procedures of search and rescue, radio communications and rank and file employees.

The story of how Morgenson became a ranger and the duties he has as a backcountry ranger is amazing, with some very similar issues facing rangers today.

This book is a brilliant work. A must read for anyone with a longing for the backcountry. Blehm gets it right in his depiction of the Sierra Nevada. You can almost taste the crisp morning air as the author describes the sensations of Kings Canyon and surrounding Sierras. This book is one for the library, to be read more than once just to get the feel of the mountains.

I would highly recommend it as a pre busy season read...I don't want to put it down at night! I quickly sent it to a friend who is a backcountry ranger in the Cascade Mountain Range before he headed off to his ranger station for the summer.
